Is there a purpose?
It's possible there is no good answer to this question. No one has found one yet. I expect that ammon is right, though; the sex drive has evolutionary value, and satisfaction would seem to encourage sexual activity. I suppose humans will keep practicing, though, no matter where the research leads.

There has to be a motivation for sex…
…..and a motive
to achieve satisfaction from the activity. Besides, the female orgasm and the processes leading thereto
are major factors in the arousal and climax of the male.
